Fall Leaves and Spawning Salmon in Central Oregon

Fall is in full swing here in Central Oregon, and it’s not just the changing leaves that make this time of year special. Alongside the vibrant yellows and reds of autumn leaves as well as larch pine needles, the region’s rivers and streams are alive with the incredible sight of spawning trout including bull trout, Chinook and Kokanee salmon. Kokanee salmon are land locked sockeye salmon from Lake Billy Chinook and the chinook are from the ocean making the long challenging migration to spawn.

I have the privilege of volunteering with the Deschutes Land Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving and restoring land to its natural state for future generations to enjoy as well as for the benefit for native wildlife. Over the past two days, I’ve been capturing video and photos that highlight the importance of these efforts. One of the most amazing experiences was documenting salmon spawning along a pristine spring that feeds into the Metolius River—a truly beautiful and vital ecosystem.

The work being done by the Deschutes Land Trust is critical in ensuring that these natural cycles continue, protecting the land and waterways for future generations. It’s been inspiring to see how restoration efforts are not only preserving this land but also bringing back the delicate balance of life that relies on it.
