The deadline is approaching and on this Wednesday January 21, 2016 at midnight when the mandatory registration will no longer free and be $5 and they must be registered by February 19, 2016. We all knew that the FAA would at some point start addressing the fast increasing numbers of recreational and commercial Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) also known as drones or UAV for the safety and security of the United States airspace. The vast majority of operators of UAS are completely responsible flying within the published guidelines of 400 feet maximum altitude, fly within line of sight, fly safe and not within prohibited classes of airspace. Unfortunately it is always the actions of a few rogue not having any concern for safety guidelines and just wanting to push limits or get the photo that cause the impending regulations on rest of us. Who Must Register
Effective December 21, 2015, anyone who owns a small unmanned aircraft of a certain weight must register with the Federal Aviation Administration's Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry before they fly outdoors. People who previously operated their UAS must register by February 19, 2016. People who do not register could face civil and criminal penalties.
The owner must be:
- 13 years of age or older. (If the owner is less than 13 years of age, a person 13 years of age or older must register the small unmanned aircraft.)
- A U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
Which unmanned aircraft do I have to register?
Owners must register their UAS online if it meets the following guidelines:
- Weighs more than 0.55 lbs. (250 g) and less than 55 lbs. (25 kg). Unmanned Aircraft weighing more than 55 lbs. cannot use this registration process and must register using the Aircraft Registry process.
- Anyone in the United States operating a UAS under 50lb recreationally
